National Shawmut Bank (first) opens.

Originally the Warren Bank, it is located at 60 Congress Street Incorporated as a national bank on April 7, 1864, it absorbs nine smaller banks to become the National Shawmut Bank in 1898. A new headquarters (second) opens on Congress Street in 1903,* and is replaced by another new building (third) in 1907,* and then another on Federal Street (fourth) in 1975.* The bank merges with the Fleet Financial Group in 1995.
